Don’t Look Back
Don’t Look Back: A Lesson from Lot’s Wife
“But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.” —Genesis 19:26
A Warning from the Past
Genesis 19 tells the story of God’s judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot and his family were given a clear command: “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!” (Genesis 19:17).
But in verse 26, Lot’s wife disobeyed. She looked back. Her longing for what she was leaving behind outweighed her obedience to God. In that moment, she turned into a pillar of salt—a permanent reminder of the cost of disobedience and divided loyalty.
Lot’s wife isn’t just an ancient figure; she’s a mirror for us today. God calls us out of destructive places, relationships, and patterns. Yet how often are we tempted to look back?
- We dwell on toxic relationships that God has already freed us from.
- We scroll through social media comparing our lives to a “highlight reel” of the past.
- We cling to old habits or mindsets because the future feels uncertain.
The truth is, looking back with longing keeps us stuck. It robs us of God’s promises and blinds us to the new opportunities He places before us.
Paul reminds us in Philippians 3:13–14: “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
The past may shape us, but it should not chain us.
Imagine a runner in a race. She’s trained, prepared, and the finish line is in sight. But instead of keeping her eyes forward, she keeps turning her head to see who’s behind her. What happens? She loses momentum, stumbles, and risks losing the race altogether.
That’s what happens when we live life looking backward. We miss what God has ahead because we’re too distracted by what’s behind.
Moving Forward
Lot’s wife teaches us this: God’s command to “not look back” is not about forgetting the past—it’s about refusing to let the past control us. Our healing, purpose, and future are in front of us, not behind.
So, ask yourself: What are you still looking back at? Is it time to release it?
Closing Reflection
The story of Lot’s wife is sobering, but it’s also empowering. It reminds us that God delivers us with purpose and for purpose. To step into the fullness of His promises, we must let go of yesterday and walk forward in faith.
Don’t look back—your future in Christ is far greater than your past.
